Minimum standards: A checklist for tenants

Before signing a tenancy agreement, tenants are advised to thoroughly inspect any property they wish to rent. That means inspecting the property in daylight hours and looking out for the following:

  • flyscreens on doors and windows,
  • adequate locks on all external doors and windows,
  • a heater (easily overlooked when seeking a property in the heat of summer!),
  • accessible power points for all of your appliances,
  • adequate cooking facilities,
  • good water quality and water pressure,
  • a hot water system that is big enough for your household,
  • curtains or other window coverings (not only for privacy, but also to help with heating and cooling).

Any sign of problems such as rising damp or vermin infestation The Tenants Union has a checklist available from website at www.tuv.org.au
